Alan Watts ~ The Story of the Chinese Farmer

Alan Watts ~ The Story of the Chinese Farmer

once upon a time it was a Chinese farmer who lost a horse ran away and all the neighbors came round that evening and said that’s too bad and he said maybe the next day the horse came back and brought seven wild horses with it and all the neighbors came around and said why that’s great isn’t it and he said maybe the next day his son was attempting to tame one of these horses and was riding it in the throne broke his leg and all the neighbors came round and the evening and said well that’s too bad isn’t it and the farmer said maybe the next day the Conscription officers came around looking for people for the army and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg and all the neighbors came round at the evening and said isn’t that wonderful and he said maybe the whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity and it is really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad because you never know what will be the consequences of the misfortune or you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune

  2. The past 4 months I have worked endlessly applying to 150+ internships for my last summer in college, and have been routinely rejected from every single company. With the summer now in action, I thought I had no hope of landing an internship and worried if that would be a precursor to when I need to find an actual job in a years time when I graduate. A few days ago, I finally got an interview and landed my dream internship. Out of all that I applied to, this is the one I would have taken over anything. Overwhelmed with joy, I was celebrating with friends and family yesterday before I started work in a weeks time. Today I received an email from the company saying that their priorities have shifted recently and there is no longer a position for me. I'm absolutely devastated and now have to suffer the embarrassment of telling my friends and family that I no longer have the internship. I'm struggling to get sleep tonight and remembered seeing this video, so decided to revisit it. I can let this experience crush me and consume me, or I can think "maybe". As Mr Watts says, "you never know what will be the consequences of a misfortune, or you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune."

  3. This video has really helped me with my depression.. I honestly wouldn't be on this planet anymore without this video.. god bless everyone.. there is always a bigger picture

  4. Why did someone say failure is pathway to success….
How many times a child falls before it can walk and run

  5. What’s even more amazing is that the events in the story are observable, how many times in your life do you think a bad/inconvenient event (ie. Flat tire, spilled coffee, missed flight) has saved from an even more unfortunate event… with 7 billion people making decisions daily there are an infinite number of possible outcomes that are changing every single moment, a constant domino effect, every single decision you make no matter how minimal ripples throughout everybody else’s life… just think if you decide to have an extra cup of coffee in the morning and leave 5 min later than you usually do, what did you just set into motion? How different would the world have been if you had left at your regular time, or even 5 min earlier… this alone should tell you there’s no such thing as fate or destiny, it’s literally all being made up as we go along

  6. Definitely maybe because the final answer is unknown♾
    Forever ? Possible yes,possible no….
    But 1000 % Definitely Maybe⁉️

  7. EXACTLY. Gods I wish more people would understand that and accept reality more readily.
    Btw, I gave a 20 000th like. FeelsGoodMan

  8. Would have been a good story, but one main element was left out,
Jesus. Without God, nothing can happen and that is one sentence you can’t say maybe at the end. "'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.'" Romans 14:11. Some may reply maybe when they read this. If you are that person, ask yourself where will you go when you die.

  9. This is Alan Watts narrating a story that is thousands of years old. The original story instead of Maybe was "Good luck, bad luck, who knows".

  10. Alan: “…his son who was attempting to tame one of these horses and was riding it and was thrown and broke his leg.”
    Man: “Aaa.”

  11. Everything is relative. Life is all about perception. It's a challenge to remember such teachings when you're having a hard time at life however.

  12. This is a story popularly told to children as an early education story in China titled 塞翁失马焉知非福

  13. Reminds me of Eckhart Tolles story about the monk who raised a child who wasn’t his but raised the child anyways. “Is that so?”

  14. "What that factor which appears to us as "meaning" may be in itself we have no possibility of knowing."
[Psyche and Symbol, Carl Jung, 1958, Part 2, Ch. 6-Two Chapters from: The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche; Sec. III. Forerunners of the Idea of Synchronicity, p. 245]

  15. back in 2016, Trump officially ran the RNC. Hillary thought, oh "good fortune". and then she told all those medias to massively prop this guy up so she can face him at the primary. that nasty bitch didnt see what was coming.

  16. You don't know what you don't know. It isn't until later you are able to reflect on if something was good or bad because while you're in it, you're in it but, you don't know that yet. One thing for certain that you cannot deny is "maybe".

  17. Really nothing is being said here. Its not insightful nor is there any lesson to be learned other than the neighbors need to mind their own business.

  18. What he failed to mention is the army lost the battle because of the lack of men. The farmer's son was a great shot and his presence was missed. The village was ransacked……….

  19. As Shakespeare said: there is no good or bad, it’s what we make of it. And as Buddha said: don’t give approval, don’t seek approval, accept everything.

  20. This video has changed my life. So thankful that YouTube can bring such valuable stories from the past to new ears.
