Celebrity Polo

Here before The Hickstead Bunn Celebrity Polo Challenge. How are you feeling Matt Sampson coming second in the speed derby? I think that’s said enough! I’m now here with Richard Howley who might have some slightly better luck. Richard, anything to say? I’m very nervous right now. He actually is very nervous. So I am standing here with Matt at The Hickstead Celebrity Polo Challenge. Actually a bit of a sneaky cheat because although he is a world class showjumper, also six goals on grass. I am retired now but I used to play. So pretty handy? I don’t know, I hope so! I think Holly was pleased to be picked with you. I am very happy to be with Holly too. She’s very competitive. We’ve got them warming up here in the background. What if any advice can you give the showjumpers? Who really don’t know what they are doing. Just try and hit the ball and go as quick as you can. He is saying his pony is afraid of the ball. Just to give everyone an idea of how this works… We are very lucky that our wonderful riders have agreed to have a bit of fun. We run the All England Polo Club here in the winter. It’s a fabulous opportunity to showcase so we have a high goal exhibition match. We also have some incredibly good showjumpers trying their hand at polo for the first time. Let’s see how that goes… Holly is good at everything and Max is a pro! I’m here with my brother John – the only polo playing member of the family. It’s obviously great crack watching the showjumpers do it. Let’s actually talk about why were are actually doing this We’ve probably got the best winter facility here in the UK Which we had to persuade dad, if you remember. It was going to be a warm up for the FEI But for an extra 20 metres, we can have a polo field. But really today is about watching the best showjumpers in the world try their hand at polo and really appreciate the four pros that are playing and what they can do with a ball. Talk us through the difference of polo proper and polo arena? Arena polo is a winter sport played as you see with a mini football and is used a lot to bring along young horses or for playing on old horses in the winter. Outdoor field is 12 times the size of this and you play with a much harder ball. The things you do in here you wouldn’t want to do outside. Really could not hit the ball very well but I think I found my place in the team I was just riding out all the other riders. I’m scared of playing against Holly. I am not looking forward to it. She frightens me in the warm up day to day. I am here with the winning team! Did you come up with a team name? The Maxes of the Hickstead Derby Celebrity Polo Special! Max, it would have been a bit embarrassing if you hadn’t won. How did you whip these two into shape? Holly was great right from the beginning. Max was a substitution. I think he was wanting the glory but he got stuck into it the second time round. Holly, well done. Girl power! Aggression, speed – was it fun? I barely hit the ball but it was great fun. Graham – how do you feel about it? It was great fun. It’s completely different. the aggression, speed and Holly – it was great. Final question – do you think we should have a prize giving like that tomorrow at the derby? Yeah!
