\>>DARLEY: After seeing the RACE performance,
I\’92m able to get a closer look at the chariots. Of course, to enter the arena, I have to dress
the part. The chariots used in the Jerash races are somewhere in between the really
light weight chariots the Romans used to race, which were constructed of willow rails and
wood, and the heavier, more visually dramatic, movie chariots.\
\ \pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1\ql\qnatural
\cf0>>DARLEY: They look pretty substantial, but there also not as substantial you may
see in some movies.\>>IBRAHIM: Yeah. Yeah. \
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1 \cf0 \
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1\ql\qnatural \cf0>>DARLEY: That\’92s Ibrahim, the charioteer
who\’92ll be driving me today. He explains that the chariots in the movies, like \’93Ben-Hur,\’94
were much heavier than the chariots they would have really used to race in Roman times. If
you are actually racing, you want the lightest, smallest chariot possible.\
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1 \cf0 \
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1\ql\qnatural \cf0>>DARLEY: So you\’92re going to take
charge of the reins here right.\>>IBRAHIM: Yeah. Yeah.\
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1 \cf0 DARLEY: And they listen to voice commands.
Yeah? \f1 \uc0\u8232
\f0>>IBRAHIM: Yeah\ \pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1\ql\qnatural
\cf0>>DARLEY: Yeah.\>>IBRAHIM: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. \
>>DARLEY: Yallah yallah. [ \i Laughs]\ \i0>>IBRAHIM: Ah, no it\’92s not yallah
yallah. It\’92s a click, click, click.\>>DARLEY: OK. Don\’92t do it yet. [
\i Laughs]\ \i0>>IBRAHIM: Yeah.\
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1 \cf0 \
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1\ql\qnatural \cf0>>DARLEY: Yallah Yallah means let\’92s
go in Arabic, but I guess \i click, click, click
\i0 is universal. OK, here\’92s where it gets little tricky. Hippodromes\’92 tracks are
ovular shaped, not circular, meaning the two end turns are sharp and treacherous. The turns
were the most exciting part of the race for spectators of old, as that\’92s where your
biggest chance of having an accident or having our opponent sabotage your chariot would occur.
Chariot races were wildly popular in Roman times and I could see why. They\’92re sort
of like the today\’92s NASCAR. \ \pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1 \f1 \cf0 \uc0\u8232
\f0>>DARLEY: Whew. Those chariots were bumpy. \
\pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sl360\slmult1\ql\qnatural \cf0>>IBRAHIM: Yeah. I think it was more
bumpy in the original chariots, because it was very light basket with four horses. Imagine
the- the feeling. Yeah.\>>DARLEY: Now I know how they felt, riding
in these chariots 2000 years ago. \>>IBRAHIM: Yeah, it\’92s amazing. Amazing.\
