“Everyone wants to beat me”: Mikael Kingsbury, #1 moguls skier

Well, I’m not a robot,
[chuckles] I’m human,
so I do mistakes,
but I think the difference
from me and the others
maybe is I care more,
and in my head it’s like,I go to bed,
I think about skiing,
and I wake up,
I think about skiing.
there’s no secret,
I have fun
and there’s nothing
special that I do.
I’m nervous like
everybody else,
I want to win
like everybody else,
it’s just that I get my things
done when it matters.
It’s tough to be
in my position sometimes,
because I know I have
the big target on my back
and everyone
wants to beat me.
But at the same time,
I tell myself,
in which situation
you want to be?
Do you want to be the favourite
or not the favourite?
I want to be the favourite,
so I’ve been five years
the leader and ranked first
in the world.
Sports Announcer:
Oh, Mikael Kingsbury!
Mikael:So like,
I kind of got used to it.
every year
I remind myself like,
how am I going to be able
to beat the season
that I just
did last year,
and every year
I seem to be able
to do just about
as good or better,
so I don’t know, I think
I enjoy the pressure now.
♪ ♪I would love to leave
a legacy in my sport,
and not only
by my results,
I want to give back
to the kids.
I remember when
I was young, you know,
looking up to the best guy
in the world,
they were always
nice to me.
So every world cup,
I see some little Miks–
I call them little Mik,
because they have like
the same goggles and me
and my skis,
so it’s always nice
to see that,
and I try to give
more to them,
and hopefully when they start
skiing in the world cup
and I retire, they say that
I made a little difference
in their career, so…that’s the kind of things
that for me are importantto leave.♪ [dramatic, sweeping]
