Explore Tallahassee – Red Hills Horse Trials

Hey, guys! As you can see, I’m all dressed up and ready to take you on a new adventure. Today, I am at the Red Hills Horse Trials, which is a world-class event right here in Tallahassee, with people from all over the states and over 11 different countries, some of which are trying to qualify for the Olympics right here. Red Hills is divided up into a three-day event. The first day is dressage, or as i like to call it – horse dancing. The second day is cross country, which is probably the most popular one as well as the most challenging one for not only the horses but the riders, and the third and final day is stadium jumping. I’m here with Jane, the event director of the Red Hills Horse Trials, and she is going to tell us a little bit more about Red Hills. Red Hills is an international competition. It involves three different tests that each horse and rider pair must complete together. The first being dressage, which is a gymnastic exercise. It’s comparable to compulsory ice figures, and then they jump cross-country over major, large, fixed obstacles that just don’t fall down. They’re running at 570 meters a minute, so they’re moving at a pretty good clip, and then the pair on Sunday will show jump, and that test is designed to show that the horse is still sound, in good shape. So it’s the same rider and horse all three days? All three days. Oh, I did not know that. Absolutely, the same horse and rider must stay together all three days. So what does it take to set this up? It takes a whole lot of work in a short period of time. We start about two weeks ahead of time when these stabling tents come in. Everything that you see has to be brought in, trucked in, and set up. Is it a bunch of volunteers? It’s a bunch of volunteers, and it is an awful lot of City support. The City crews that work out here are absolutely phenomenal! Another thing you can do at Red Hills – shop! You have dresses, bags, jewelry. I wonder if they have any hats to finish my outfit. So am i doing it right this goes? This goes in the front? Willy Wonka. Oh wow. This is very “Pretty Woman.” Pretty woman with curls. I feel like I’m ready to ride a horse in this one. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that it’s something they don’t understand, so they might not be comfortable, but it’s a completely welcoming environment, and you know you don’t have to buy a horse to enjoy this. That’s really important, a really important concept. I just happen to like horses a great deal. I only ride a little bit, but I just happen to like them, and I have always been interested in dressage and the jumping. It’s just a fascinating thing for me. It’s kind of a hidden secret wish, but that life won’t happen, this time. All right, buddy, here we go, here we go, I got you. Horses actually happened to be my favorite animal. They’re so beautiful and strong. My daughter calls them big puppies with clickety feet. Many people think, “Oh, I don’t know anything about horses. I don’t need to come and see that.” You don’t have to know a thing about horses to enjoy the park, to enjoy the horses. You don’t have that many opportunities to get this close to this caliber of horse, but the competitors absolutely love the spectators being here because they don’t see that in many other events. Well, that’s what we’re trying to encourage – people to do to come out of their house, to come check out the trails and explore Tallahassee. So I know what you’re thinking. “I don’t own a horse,” but that’s okay. Here in Tallahassee we have one of the most amazing trails where horses can ride, and we also have places where you can go get horseback riding lessons, have an afternoon with your kids. You can watch horse shows all year round. So if you’re ready to do something different, come out and explore some of our equestrian friendly trails here in town, such as the Alford Greenway, Phipps Park, Canopy Roads and Miccosukee Greenway and so many more. So get out of the house and come out and explore Tallahassee with me! Hey, buddy! Oh, you want more? I don’t have any more carrots. Sorry.
