Hiking the Besseggen Ridge | VISIT NORWAY

Imagine balancing on Besseggen ́s steep mountain ridge – glancing down on the mountain lake below. My name is Johannes, and I work as a nature guide in Norway. It is my pleasure to welcome you to this beautiful country,
– and advice you on what you should know before your hike. Besseggen rises around 1600 meter above sea level. During the hike you will bridge approximately 1000 meters’ of elevation. It is common to use between 6-8 hours on the hike, including breaks. There are two alternatives: You can either walk from Gjendesheim tourist lodge, – or take the boat across the lake and start from Memurubu. It is said that if you take the boat and start from Memurubu,
– the roundtrip is slightly easier than the other way around. If you want you can either stay at Gjendesheim or Memurubu
– and have a fresh and early start on the day of your hike. To ensure your hike goes as planned,
– there are certain things you need to know. This trail requires that you are in shape,
– that you have good balance, and a strong mind. Don’t start hiking without training,
– wearing the right gear, – and bringing plenty of food and water in your backpack. Dress warm, use sturdy hiking boots,
– and leave your sneakers and jeans at home. Sneakers are not made for the mountains,
– and jeans will stay wet and cold in case of bad weather. If you are uncertain about what to bring,
– please check our packing list (video). Please make sure you check the weather forecast before your hike, – and know that it will be cooler at the top than at the start. Weather conditions may also change along the way,
– so make sure you have waterproof clothing with you. You don’t have to hike Besseggen with a guide,
– but there are possibilities to join a guided tour. Either way, I hope you have a wonderful trip,
– and that you enjoy everything Besseggen has to offer. Have a safe hike!
