Horror injuries of mum saved by helmet after being crushed beneath horse

A mum who was nearly crushed by her horse after he fell on top of her says her life was saved by her riding helmet  Shocking photographs show Grace Walker, 36, after she and her horse Alvin fell at Hickstead Derby in West Sussex last Thursday  Showjumper Grace, from York, fell head first at a water jump before Alvin rolled on top of her  But the dog groomer and mum-of-one was left unscathed thanks to her helmet.  She said: “I’d been jumping really well all week and felt great    “Alvin came towards a long water jump.  “The horse took off, tripped and did a forward roll  “I landed face first and as the horse got up it rolled back over me before it got up  “I don’t remember any of it. I was put on a spinal board and head brace and taken straight to A&E  “The Hickstead team were great, they’re really well organised so as soon as I went down they sprang into action ”    Rushed to hospital, Grace was left with only severe bruising and a bloodied face  Grace was wearing a Charles Owen SP8 helmets which has a wide peak compared to many other riding helmets  Despite the helmet being damaged in the fall, Grace credits her miraculous escape to the helmet  She said: “I think if I’d had a smaller hat it definitely could have been a lot worse ”  “The doctors said I had no brain damage or serious injuries. I got two black eyes and some bruising on my face and ear  “They said the helmet saved my life.  “I’m just so grateful to all the staff at Hickstead for reacting so quickly  “Wearing a helmet is just so important and if I hadn’t been wearing the Charles Owen helmet things could have been very different ”
