HORSE RIDING | SOPHIE WARD | EVERYDAY HERO 034

um hello welcome to another episode of
the everyday hero show my name is Swardiq Mayanja and on today’s show I
get to talk to this wonderful lady Sophie who actually works with me but
the cool thing about Sofia she takes care of the horses she trains you train
people to ride horse and you don’t train horses she does both she’s a miracle
worker all right Sophie welcome to the show thank you very much destroyed
you’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living that is
to go on doing things you don’t like doing which is stupid better to have a
short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a
miserable way let’s just start from the basics and where are you from and how
did you start the whole training extravaganza
I’m from Littleton and I started I think like I rode a
horse in England one point like this tiny little pony were you born in
England no in Austria yeah so and then of sudden I was like I
wanna ride horses and I was like no and so she put me in every sport Under the
Sun and at the end I was like I still want to ride horses so she was like okay
I guess so when I was driving over here it’s my first time in Littleton I did
see a lot of barns and let’s see a lot of like the horse
type situation I feel like it was like meant to be kinda right this is this has
Littleton always been okay did your mom when she was in England did she white
roses she’s too better horse – Connor tried to kill her basically so she’s got
red this time out I don’t know what a took off me when you say took off you
mean the horse literally just ran away yeah like where’s our fighter flight
well their flight animals basically so in the spot of danger they’re gonna take
off they’re gonna run and get out of the situation every man for himself and no
no yeah and so the horses left your mom well she was on his back oh that’s
really scary alright now I understand the situation
yeah if I had a kid and my horse took off of me I probably would not want them
to ride horses all right so we know where you’re from
do you like has horses because you said you wanted to ride Bush has that just
been the pole do you love animals like how is that you
know is it where do you think caused you to come to for training horses and
training rabbits no like I like horses and I love animals but I was never the
kid that read all the horse books watch all the horse movies I was never into
like I don’t know spirit like whatever those no kids movie there I was never
into that I just really wanted to ride them I love the fact that there’s a
danger part to it I love the fact that like it’s exciting and like the sport
that I do and Friday is you can die situation that like gives me
I’m like a thrill-seeker I think I love the dangers a thrill-seekers up
I mean how dangerous for striving was so we’ll get good right okay so why don’t
you describe to us what it is that you do when it comes to training horses
right I’m training riders explain to us like the process as if like that we all
know I’m ignorant I don’t know anything about horse riding at all so just
explain to us what it is that you do from a beginner I try to get them to get
on the horse look good like train of course or train a kid very different
debate very different let’s talk about training a kid first why did I have a
first of a beginner and I usually put them on our most bomb-proof ponies
or horse to pay on the side and bomb-proof um guess it improve means
kids could run and it’s like run out at them scream throw sticks at them a
gunshot could go off like a car there could be a car crash over here and it
would not spook ya so so those horses are like you know right a die like yeah
they’re not gonna take off a nobody and we’re in a neighborhood so it’s like
some of our horses if a kid runs by with like they come off the bus they run by
with the project like a giant like paper thing like some of our horses will take
off other ones will just be like so that’s where you start you have to
start with the right course what’s make sense yeah and how little are these kids
how young can you get a kids normally well it depends if you’re a parent like
we don’t we start at five a little bit too young just because their attention
span and just the way like you have to be safe around the horses if they’re not
paying attention a horse could kick out at them or does she push them over so we
start at five a lot of people like privately if they own their own horse
they start their kids at three and this sounds a lot like Oh sounds like
you have to start your kid really really good on you don’t have to see you see
his worthless bike horse riding and like being what is it called when you’re not
racing against whether you just doing like the cool stuff it depends there’s
different so there’s different things you can do with horses so you do rate
everybody knows nobody’s race horses and there’s a venting there’s like different
categories of right so venting Hunter hunter jumper sulky races you can do like derby kind of
like cross-country and duritz brides Western shit time different things rodeo
yeah and I forgot about rodeos that’s exciting
I’m like back stop my like rodeo I like rodeo um it’s probably is the only other
thing I know outside of racing okay all right so you start with these five year
olds right you have to the bond to force you have a five war can you just put
them on it’s like if this horse is bomb-proof
what’s this horse’s name the one the white ones it’s been walking the gray
one that’s been walking up and down here his name is Kip yeah do you have to
start with the very small pony horse or can you put him on a regular depends on
the size of the kid and usually the height scares them
if I have a beginner like older adult I’ll put him on a horse by the beginner
five-year-old it’s probably safer and less intimidating if I put a monocle
and do you think the transition from someone learned it starting on on a pony
to getting on a horse is humongous or is it like it’s just like it’s the
same situation just it’s just the height like you don’t realize how big they are
because once you add a saddle and everything it kind of and you get up on
the horse you don’t realize how big they’re until you get up and then you’re
like get down put your hands really far and the pony ponies can be a lot more
stubborn so they’re kind of I’m not saying like they’re awesome to use a
lesson program but I like to use them cuz you kind of learn how to be an
active rider instead of a passive prior to sitting there and they’ll do
everything hmm they’re kind of like well I don’t want to go this way
so we’re gonna go that way oh so learning on a ponies yes I like it yeah
and are you able to ride a pony me um it depends on the pony so we have little we
have an Abby Abby pony who’s like this big that I can’t fit on obviously and
then we’ve got I’m training a pony right now for the school and I can fit on him so it’s been a weight limit for like
human beings to get on horses yeah so there’s like usually ponies it’s
actually funnier because they’re shorter and they’re close to the ground they
have stock your legs and hold a lot more weight you’re learning no then some of
our okay you’re the cool see I never knew that I ficken horses would just be
like though you know for the bigger people
but no so that makes sense they got the bigger one like in the bigger the bigger
stock here horses are definitely will hold a lot
stop here people yeah the thinner like racehorse kind of grainy morris is not
going to hold that much do you do do you deal with any of the racehorses so some
of our thoroughbreds actually came off the track so a lot of eventers because
we do Aventine here come straight off the track because they have that
endurance and they can withhold a very long run they
love to joke if you like to run that much um did you do you ever put money on
these racehorses have you ever could like to go grace I’ve been to like
Kosovo because I went to Kentucky for school so I mean instead of going to
football because our football team stunk we would go to
which was a racetrack I mean I picked them I think the ones that I like I
can’t really I’m really bad better no I feel like when it comes to racing
everyone is it’s hard Marcus the horses that look lame when
they come out with lanes means up there like Olympian or something like I don’t
usually win the race so I have no idea cookies alright so now we have our war
so we’re putting them on you know we have our kid putting them on Oh Boris or
Pony depending on the size or not now tell me when you were training someone
to ride a horse is it like alright I want this horse to
just listen to you and like just walk up and down the track or you know like do
the tricks and stuff and that way you guys start first
or is it like I wanna like go so our ponies or like our school nurses are
trained yeah she do walk trot canter and a nice pace and they know our commands
and I usually fir beginner we put them on a lunge line which is like a giant leash
ok so they go on a circle around me I miss its leash and so they don’t have to
worry about steering or anything and we work on the
which is very important canister helping picks on what his hold
I mean stopping and then we work on our position keeping our heels down saying
nice and tall sitting nice and back in the saddle and then we work on that I
introduced the sitting trot I don’t really introduce steering until a little
bit later on and we’re gone in a little bit during the end of a lesson but it’s
kind of a more complex thing to like handle and to comprehend so with little
kids they’re not gonna they’re want it they want to go around they want to try
everything so I’d be saying I want to try but the posting trot the sitting
trot and that’s usually the extent of it they do do do people ever at these days
because I know it on like the olden movies right the ladies sit on the side
exactly is that real size that is real but it no one does it and there’s a
certain saddle so it’s not like you’re just sitting on the saddle like they
have like a knee block Oh supervisor I tried a knife it’s more
difficult I feel like it should be because you’re not valid yeah but I also
don’t have a side saddle saddle so there’s just doing it for fun
that’s too bad I’m sorry all right okay so um when it comes to you
and horse and this whole thing I know you train horses I mean like you’d love
them but tell me about your career this is beautiful I mean look at these
in I think they’re like beautiful things I’ve ever seen
he is he’s got a fat lip though um so yeah told me a little bit about your
career so you said it took your mom a while to let you begin starting to rifle
just cuz it was expensive a grind sex and I think it sort of scared her to
like well not as much as like she’s she understands the risks but a lot of
family members you obviously had to decide early
it falls off and is not our responsibility that’s really scary that
is actual desert you think about every sport you don’t have another brain
working with you you might have teammates but they speak your same
language they have another brain they don’t speak our language and if
something scares them and they take off how am I supposed to prevent that they
sometimes I’ve seen a butterfly land on a horse and he takes off I’ve seen I
literally could not tell you why some horses take off but they just do they
just something scares it or they get stung by being they run and the kid
falls up it’s just the name of the game you’re working with an animal that’s
eats a different language that you can’t always understand when you say that way actually maybe I
should hold off on this birthday if you like into cheese and Lord all right all
right so how old were you when you started I was seven you were seven she
was seven years old when she started writing and then so how did how where
did you start did you start with the racing did you start with the bad thing
what did you get I started with dressage it’s which is Valley for horses you’re
giving the pattern and your dad shoes me were you good and I’m sorry
so when you did this worse when you did the the ballet of the horses were you in
high school was they like a school team or was it like a travel team or was it
like the mass team how was that a barn and did you like did you compete yeah so
I when you thinking it’s really expensive right the hook being dealing
with horses being in this expensive sport is it expensive just because you
need to buy your own horse is it expensive the equipment what is it in
lessons like a 30-minute private is $65 my pants but I buy which normally would
but my pants can run from like $180 to like $300 and my boots see we had a
freakin money the boots that I wear which are paddock
boots they are newbies no these are just boots which also cost me like $200 yeah
so peg boots my pack boots one run to like 150 which are bad and then my wear
half chaps which are 150 as well to show for $350 yeah it’s like the ones that
you see like in the show like the pretty ones yeah Wow so all together this is
like over a grand already yeah not even counting longer than a 30-minute session
and then some polos can run from like $50 and a polo like a shirt justice yeah
you actually do have you ever played the sport oh well yes I actually my
roommates in college when was the captain of the polo team excuse me but
really yeah were you any good yeah hard difficulty once it’s not gonna be good
not good yeah and it hurt your wrist we could have you Madeline
oh wow I had no idea okay so tell me I’m the best experience you’ve had on the
horse the best competition the biggest win what’s the biggest prize how iong
have you gotten or did you get well like there’s levels and eventing
hens like just like I so I have been basic training horses
kind of like the back person so I’ll train them to a certain level I’ll hire but I’ve done like mass
amounts of shows just because I can’t afford it
it’s kind of all about money that really sucks do you think you’re good enough to
compete with the big guns yeah you know you do I think and when you say you have
the horse I like that you brought that up because this is a big question I’ve
had when it comes to racing specifically but even general I’m sorry but only
different from what we do I’m sorry but if you had to choose like the like a
very skilled like proficient you know amazing rider versus like an amazing
horse like if you were if you had the choice between the two
who would which would you go is it more the horse or is it more the rival well I
know the right air to have to be both like well yeah and plus it’s that’s a
tricky question because these days it’s a little upsetting
eventing the eventing world has gone more towards the horses really expensive
and knows exactly what’s doing like you need a high level of course to jump
these big jumps and people are amateurs are buying
these very expensive very experienced horses that take them around in it but
it comes to a point where if if you don’t know what you’re doing up
there it’s gonna you’re going to end it like horrible disaster like Falls or
just burning your horse or what people these days have been they want to do the
big ones they know the big shows they want all these all this like they want
people to notice them so we buy these really expensive courses and they don’t
know what they’re doing and they end up either hurting the horse or they end up
falling really hard and hurting himself but these jumps that we do for a venting
don’t move and sometimes when the horse hits you will flip oh wait oh because
when I’m the very little of will like the jumping stuff that I’ve seen with
the horses the bars come off so that so we have three so been teams like the
triathlon of riding so we are massage Stadium which is the jumps that you see
yeah they fall across country in danger they’re getting better with their safety
rules are getting more like they’re getting more proficient with how the
jumps are built and how they break if you do hit them but we do jump over
giant logs or big ditches with water and it’s like any and it’s slippery and they
go fast it’s time so you go you got time you’ve got these big giant jump Kelly
over four feet yeah and jumps that don’t move and if you’re if you get to a
question up and you don’t know the striding you don’t know how fast your
horse needs to go you don’t where you need to take off you can end
up in a very sticky situation I mean this is kind of amazing so like I know I
don’t say horses look like dumb or silly but like I feel like most animals just
naturally know what to do right like wouldn’t if they’re running and if an
animal is able to jump they could just jump up yeah or if it was like a thing
like that I can understand if they wanted to go around but it is it is like
entirely on the rider to make sure that the force jumps at the right time yeah
and sometimes the horses know their striding and like see their spot and
can’t help you it depends on your money bite here up there to help them to tell
them no no like this is where we’re taking off this is the safest way like
like sometimes I just like okay we’re going and you’re like oh god here I go
then you fall off like me so you did just have a little bit of a fall I
didn’t really saw how often do you fall off course I actually I was due for a
fall off I haven’t fallen off in a while and I literally the day yesterday go I
think today’s day ah so you are you coming well I just felt like I have been
were you just off we just off like you personally no I just like I knew I was
riding a baby horse that has been throwing her feet and I’ve sat most of
her crap that she was pulling on me and I smacked her and she just threw herself
straight in the air and whipped her head forward and her butt up and ina stood
flipped over and landed unfortunately not on my feet I’m sorry but that’s this
and then you get back on in dude I mean you’re really brave to do well yeah I’m
a big wish when it comes to injuries and stuff I really like once I’m like
injured I’m hurt I’m like oh my god you know like I go the whole nine forget if
I go the opposite way I get a little I get a little upset with myself and
I get just back on and go just because they were jumping and they’re doing big
jumps and I was like I will not miss him okay it’s my friend’s horse and she
makes fun of it what I thought is so is there like I mean like you know how many
trainers are in this specific top trainers right now that are licensed by father I mean say like a competition
between the five of you or is it like I want my horse to be the best I want my
kid to be no it’s not really a competition because that we all teach at
different levels like I’m normally because I’m just starting out I went
from this training horses and riding myself to now teaching and so I normally
teach little peanuts the first like the beginners I think I would get to like I
I can do the stuff but when it comes to teaching it’s just a little bit
difficult thing I understand but I sometimes I get some old level of
teaching I’m like well I personally don’t feel that I’m like capable of
teaching this level of writing because even though I know how to do everything
I don’t know how to put into words other people so we have Catherine who’s our
head instructor who teaches the more advanced like me and the other
instructors and the more advanced riders and then there’s a couple there’s Megan
who teaches kind of a little bit more advanced than me but I normally teach
the base like yeah peanuts fun one I like I like that
name – peanuts peanut the peanuts um so it to be a peanut do you just have to be
a beginner do you have to be a Sorry mate
well I teach mostly like a little kids usually a lot of kids I haven’t I’ve had
like I think two recently new students that are older and they’re like that are
like in their 40s but other than that they’re normally the parents want to
start the market and I want to I want to learn I really do but literally just
ride a horse no jumps fork you know that’s not jumping no jumping comes way
down the road you don’t introduce a jump to a person in like a year right
well maybe sooner than a year okay I feel like I’m a quick learner but it’s
funny but then you get on these horses and then you’re like manage people it’s
funny how people get on these horses and they they’re all confident they know and
then they they go to turn and they’re like this horse won’t turn this horse
won’t turn I’m like just give them a little bit harder pull it along I don’t
want to hurt them thing I’m like just go on this it’s funny how like the
mentality change and how long gonna take you would you
say did you pick it up quick you said you started at something when when
you’re a little younger I feel nothing it’s easier but you just have more like
intuition yeah I was told it a little bit more
intuition than some people I think just because I have a background like horses
and it’s just in my blood I think something faster but I mean for safety
reasons you start slow with riding it’s not that you can just oh now you can go
you know I try now you can go canter it’s just because if that horse takes
off they want to be able to they want to know that you’d be able to handle that
take off before you start tannery just what is caring tannery is a gate above
trotting so it goes walk trot canter Kelly well for thinking was riding for
westerns a little bit they’ve got like jog
but it’s like the same like you know Pat’s from slow to fast yeah yeah yeah
okay and Gallup is a full-on like rock run yeah Michael so that’s where 45 mile
an hour ago sounds pretty that sounds pretty good yeah is that like are you
able to do that yeah oh my gosh I love it
the minute a horse just takes off I love it and I love a little buck I love the
horses are cheeky I love them I love to throw a little boring if it’s
just straightforward gonna get a little too
of course you always need that so if you were going to give some advice I call
this the everyday helo show and I want you know because they think you doing
things that most people like I want to ride a horse so like than me like I look
up to Sophie because I want to ride a horse someday like her 4 to 5 miles an
hour if you were gonna give advice to a beginner one of your peanuts
what is the mentality what do you think they should come with what should they
be prepared for if they want to start this whole forcing an extravaganza you
should just be prepared to have fun but also work hard because it’s not all
about just gain on the pony and riding you have to learn I’m going to tack up
you have to learn how to put a curse on you have to learn how to do your
stirrups everything properly it’s not gonna and it’s not gonna come easy and
fast you’re not going to be running around the ring good appear first like
couple months it just takes a slow process but
nice to have a bond with an animal okay so you did exceed I mean you’ve said it
a few times and it’s it’s not they can’t be for everyone because you write that’s
expensive yeah that’s about that unusual ways of
working it off like we have a program where kids I can’t afford it they come
they work it off and then they ride after tonight I think I should actually
like the greatest thing I’ve ever heard yeah what you can work to write so it
works amazing program which I did when I was 15 and I you do we do a lot of stuff
but it’s totally worth it but you cuz we have a lot of horses here but you do
morning barn which is cleaning out the stalls doing the water turn out feed and
everything and then right after you get to ride works off so um Sophie here I’m
we’re gonna stop with the conversation start and if you don’t mind I would love
for you to just introduce me to some of these pretty majestic gorgeous looking
animals I think that would be a little interesting if you’re open to doing that
but I don’t know I think I am going to but all right
well whoever’s die cuz I signed up because I am gonna take a minimum of
three classes I really want to at least get up but get Monica three classes I’ll
be able to get audible yeah Tony whatever they desire Oh perfect so a
minimum of three but with these prices I might have to go shovel some doodoo I
don’t know I don’t know but yeah I’m excited
thank you so much for coming on I really do appreciate um last last last night
okay five years from now ten years from when you’re riding horses in England and
you know I don’t know where the big horse ranges and the big horse
competitions are in Kentucky right but when you’re doing that you you know you
have the best horses at all of the world and Q calls you up and says can I get
another interview would you do me beyond nervous yeah so now let’s go look at
these beautiful horses
