How to Ride Your Horse at a Walk : How to Turn a Horse with One Hand

Hi, I’m Kelli on behalf of Expert Village,
I’m going to show you how to ride your horse with a walk. Now I’m going to show you how
want to turn your horse at the walk riding one handed on the western style. So again
we are going to make sure we are holding our reins properly and even. So we are going to
pull them out to the end and make sure they are even. To pick up we are going to bump
her a little bit. Ask her to walk. Now western riding one handed is a little different so
you are going to be neck reining. So you are going to be laying the rein in the direction
that you want to turn. So I’m turning to the left, I’m laying the right rein on the side
of her neck. I’m turning to the right, I’m laying the left rein on this side of her neck
applying a little bit of outside leg pressure so I’m turning this way to the left. I’m applying
a little bit of right leg pressure. If you notice western is a little bit different to
riding one handed. You steer more off of your outside rein than you do in the inside rein
as in English riding.
So again you are shifting your cheek bone a little slightly telling her that you want
her to shift her weight in the opposite direction. Just laying the rein looking where you want
to go, keeping your line shoulder, hip and heel. That is how you would want to turn the walk
riding one handed in western style.
