How To Select and Fit The Proper Bicycle Helmet

Hi, I’m Angela Katz. I’m the Trauma Injury Prevention Outreach
Coordinator, I’m with Westchester Medical Center, and I’m here to share with you what
you need to know about bicycle safety and helmets. What you should look for when you’re buying
a bike helmet, it should be certified by Consumer Product Safety, and it has a logo right inside
here. If it doesn’t have it, then don’t buy it. It’s not going to be a safety helmet that’s
going to work when they do have a crash. Bike helmets should be replaced every three
to five years, depending on if you outgrow the size of it. But the other thing about it is if you have
one impact on this helmet, it’s like the retractable bumper on a car, once it expands and it contracts,
you can’t use it again. That polymer foam in there is gone. You need to replace it right away. And never buy a used helmet from a tag sale. You don’t know what has happened to the helmet. First of all, in order to convince kids to
wear helmets, parents have to wear their helmets also. So they have to be a believer in it also. So anytime you’re on any type of wheels, then
you need to wear a helmet. The other thing about it is, if the helmet’s
not comfortable. A lot of parents will get that helmet so snug
and tight that it constricts on the neck or on the ears, maybe it’s not well-ventilated
so it’s overheating, so it’s really getting a helmet that works well, and then both of
you working with the child to pick it out. Well you know a helmet fits properly when
it fits on your head and it’s nice and snug, but it’s not too tight, not too loose, and
it doesn’t shift left or right or forward. The other thing that’s great about the new
helmets is they have this retention rod on the back, and it tightens the helmet up so
that it can stay basically on your head without even the strap. So you can go forward or backward, it’s not
going to be a problem. The other thing about it is that it’s got
the little padding inside it so that it absorbs the sweat and keeps it cool and wicking. They should wear bright colored clothes and
reflectors on their bikes to keep them safe and aware with the cars that are driving by.
