Lele Pons Talks Riding Horses in Venezuela, Telenovelas & More | Growing Up Latino

– Hi, this is Lele Pons, I was born in Venezuala and this is Growing Up
Latino on Billboard. The best memory of living in Venezuela was definitely the… When I lived on a farm
so was riding the horses, ’cause I remember doing that
professionally with my dad. So working in the farm with my
dad was like the best memory. As a kid, I was very jealous of little girls or, like, if
my dad was with a woman. ‘Cause I was like, No, my dad is my mom’s. Or, like, my mom was with
another kid, or with another man, I was like, No, she belongs to me! I’m her favorite! Or, like, that type. The craziest family
tradition that we have is that we, I think every
year, we go to the mountains and we all have to go on this
river that is like freezing. It’s like Titanic. Like, and then we have
to stay there and go in. I never go in, but it’s
like a family tradition. We have to go to this damn river, which is super cold,
it’s like unhealthy cold. So I think that’s not a good one. The best arepas are the ones that my nanny used to do, when she put ground meat, cheese and also a little bit of I don’t know what it was And rice! A little bit of rice also, inside. The best advice from my abuelita is, be the voice you want to hear. How did I celebrate my Quince? I celebrated here, in
Miami, in my dad’s house. Everybody was there, and we danced to On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez. It was really cool. I had a beautiful white dress, it was cool, I loved it a lot. So a lot of artists I used
to have on my playlist was Shakira, Christina Aguilera, and my uncle as well, because I love the songs, and then Daddy Yankee. A Latina guilty pleasure song? (Singing “La Montra – Que Perra Mi Amiga”) I sing that a lot with my gringa friends ’cause they don’t know what it means. Oh my God, telenovelas. Telenovela, they don’t know what that is, like, when they usually
not know what they were, but my life is a telenovela. So they have learned a lot
of dramatic moments with me that have to do with telenovelas. Also, tequenos, they
didn’t know what that was, they thought it was cheese sticks. And I was like, That’s not cheese sticks. Tequenos is something
completely different. So tequenos is something I, kind of, showed them what it was, some other food. If my life was a telenovela, it would definitely be
called Sinverguenzas. (laughs) Best memory growing up back
home is playing with my dolls and creating skits with my dolls since I didn’t have a phone before. A proud Venezuelan
American is how powerful the girls are in Venezuelan girls. Like, if somebody tells
you, hey she is Venezuelan. People are like, oh my gosh she is fire. So being a woman from Venezuela, it just like automatically makes me proud ’cause I know what type of person I am, very strong, independent woman.
