  1. These were the days where judges had to save marks for better performances to come later. Considering that, I think the 5.7 for presentation was acceptable. But a 5.3? Please. Everything she did was really solid so I think she should have had 5.6 or 5.7 on the first mark. She was the European champion after all. Her scores may have been too low but she ended up third, which was the right placement, IMHO.

  2. I agree with that 5.7(actually even 5.6 for artistic mark was fine). But that 5.3? I really didn't catch any 0.4 deduction in this program!

  3. Perhaps the judges put her base mark lower…in her spiral sequence she didn't hold any position longer than a second and her layback spin could have had a better position. Both were required elements…so PERHAPS that's why they saw.

  4. I wonder if the judes thought she touched down in the combination. And @MTVMANN is right… her spiral sequence was sub-par as was her layback. But that triple loop had so much air and length!!! She also didn't fill the rink much!

  5. What a bum deal she got in 1998, drawing first to skate the short program, and then drawing last to skate in the free. I'm sure that order really did wonders for her famous nerves.

I don't know exactly what it is about this skater, b/c I know she's not the most elegant or consistent, but I always find her thrilling to watch. She has that special "it" factor going, I guess, that's hard to describe. When she was on, she was amazing!!! Miss you Maria.

  6. BRAVO MARIA! For me the best skater EVER…i'll never be at peace with her 4. place in this competition! Maria you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always will be!!!! LOVE>>>

  7. I think Scott was wrong about the "required elements" section near the end, when the list said "two footwork sequences." I don't remember that as a requirement.

  8. Scott was right, spiral sequence is a second footwork sequence. First is a footwork done in a streight-line, serpentine or in a circle and second is a spiral sequence.

  9. I remember being so upset for Maria when she drew first to skate in the SP! But her terrific skate held up thank goodness! 🙂

  10. Skating last is the best position. You already know what everyone else has done. Therefore you know what to add or take out to win.

  11. If I were to take a drink every time Scott Hamilton said the word "maturity," I'd be wasted before the competition was finished.

  12. She came about as close to double footing the lutz landing as you can come without actually doing it. It was clean, but it's so close you have to confirm it on the slow motion replay.

  13. I've never been a fan of Maria's skating. I felt she was too boxy and harsh, especially when jumping. Not fluid like a lady skater should be.

  14. even if she was first to skate the marks were to low… technicly best programm of the night. skating at the end could have been 1st or 2nd.

  15. Maria was the greatest artist of them all. And her magnificence was on full display in this performance. Simply put, those judges sucked!
