Riding without sight

Riding without sight

I think that because the horse sees
it makes me feel you know like I I’m not blind
it makes me feel a real freedom and I know a lot of people that horses have
got them through you know many hard times in their life when I was in my
early 20s I was working at a racetrack in the tri-cities and the horse started
to break into a canter and it it fell and I took the blow to my head I had a
concussion and it detached my retinas I went through three surgeries but they
were unsuccessful I was probably to the point of not
thinking life was worth living seriously enough that I could have done you know
made a horrible tragic mistake probably three months after losing my sight we’re
probably you know the hardest times of my life the horses you know have allowed
me to kind of maintain my sanity and and be able to do something that I was you
know just born to do and have a great passion for my father was my hero and my
rock and he was prematurely killed in a farming accident and so I think that I’m
doing that for him more and more every time I work with a horse because he knew
that what I really needed to do was to get back on a horse and start working
with horses and and told me I could do it and when I couldn’t do it he helped
me adapt and find ways to be able to do it alright you know catching a horse in
a ten acre pasture when you can’t see can be a real challenge and it’s like
finding a you know needle in a haystack we struggled when I first started
working with horses of my orientation in an arena or a round pen and I realized
that I needed a sound source to be able to you know ride my horse around that
gives me a point of reference in that arena I have been very amazed at what
blind people could do and I know that a lot of my friends that I ride with you
know they used to maybe not really want to go for a ride with me because they
would look at what I couldn’t do and a lot of them now are like they don’t even
consider me blind and I that’s what I want I want people to not not look at me
as a blind person that look at me as a person that rides my horse without sight
not very many of us go through life without you know some big I call them
brick walls that we have to hit and you know there there really is no future in
giving up you have to get beyond that find out who you are live your passion
and I would just say you know no matter how bad it seems I think life life can
be wonderful
