The TAHC Horseback Emergency Response Team

The TAHC Horseback Emergency Response Team

The horse responder team idea came to me as
a result of what happened during Hurricane Ike where there were so many displaced animals
we realized the state of Texas had no infastructure in place to help people catch their animals
and take them to shelters when i looked around at the animal health commission what we had
were cowboys and we had the desire and the ability to go on short notice and to catch
animals and get people their livestock returned to them as easily as possible. We have deployed
our horse repsonse team to come down here to Zapata to get a good estimate idea of what
its going to take for our responders to come this far and thats why this exercise is for
us to see how they can get down here and how low it takes for them to get down here and
what they need to have when they get down here they all volunteered to do this and have
the passion to be able to go out and help people they also are skilled at mapping and
they’re skilled at communications and working with the local responders everybody on the
team is very experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to horses, when it comes to
cattle, ranching we have a resource that truthfully most other states cannot provide to their
citizens and thats why its important that we be available to help if a hurricane would
hit Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi or even Florida and we would be willing to go and
help them when theres a disaster we have to help get the cattle back up look for strays
and even go look for somebody this isn’t a team that will only respond on horseback they’re
part of the Animal Health Commission service to the state of Texas and horses are one of
their tools in their toolbox each year we learn more to
the needs of our people the needs of what
the responders will need as far as their horses equipment our horse team is the only one in
the United States and the Texas Animal Health Commission is the largest animal health agency
in the United states its a real honor to be doing this for the Texas Animal Health Commission
and the state of Texas we have horses and cowboys and it is what we do we are the animal
health commission we are Texas.
