Todd Eldredge – 1998 United States Figure Skating Championships, Men’s Free Skate

>>Terry: AND TODD ELDREDGE COLLECTING HIS THOUGHTS.>>Brian: IT HAS BEEN INTERESTING BECAUSE WHILE TRIFUN WAS GETTING HIS MARKS, TODD WAS GOING AROUND DOING TRIPLE TOES WHICH IS SORT OF MARKING WHAT HE MIGHT BE DOING FOR A QUADRUPLE. HE DID TRIPLE AND DOUBLE. THAT’S UNCHARACTERISTIC OF TODD.>>Terry: ELDREDGE WITH A CAREE THAT HAS BEEN UP AND DOWN. HE HAS FOUGHT BACK TIME AND TIME AGAIN. NOW TRYING TO WIN HIS FIFTH U.S. TITLE. HE WOULD BE THE FIRST TO DO THAT SINCE MR. DICK BUTTON, WHO HAS CAPTURED SEVEN.>>Brian: AND I THINK PART OF TH QUAD CRE WITH TODD, HE’S TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT IT. HE WANTS TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT HE CAN DO IT. I THINK THAT’S THE MOS IMPORTANT THING FOR HIM>>Dick: HE WANTS TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT HE’S GUTSY ENOUGH TO TRY IT. IT IS AGAINST THE VERY NATURE OF HIS CONSERVATISM TO BE ABLE TO HAVE TO DO THAT. @>>Dick: IF HE DOES IT, IT’S GOING TO BE RIGHT HERE. HERE IT COMES. ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. WELL, IT WAS A GOOD, CLEAN REVOLUTION, EVE THOUGH HE DI’T LD IT. HE DID COMPLETE THE REVOLUTION IN THE AIR AND IT WAS NOT A MISTAKE TO TRY IT.>>Brian: WELL, WE’LL SEE. SEE HOW THE REST OF THE PROGRAM GOES. IT IS REAY IMPORTANT THAT HE SKATE WELL TONIGHT.>>Dick: LIST ON THE THE AUDIENCE, THOUGH, APPLAUD THAT.>>Dick: HIS TRIPLE AXEL. DOUBLE TOE LOOP.>>Brian: WHAT’S INTERESTING WITH THAT IS HE WAS SUPPOSEDO DO A TPLE AXEL, TRIPLE TOE LOOP. SOAYBE THAT QUAD TIRED HIM OUT ENOUGH THAT HE WASN’T CONCENTRATING AND DIDN’T FEELUP TO DNG A TRIPLE TRIE. THESE ARE THE MISTAKES THAT HE CAN’T DO IN THE OLYMPICS.>>Dick: I DON’T THINK THAT WAS NECESSARILY A MISTAKE. THAT’S A PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE COMBINATION.>>Brian: IT IS. BUT HE’S GOING TO NEED MORE THAN THAT.>>Dick: GOOD POSITION IN THIS L. WONDFUL TURNOUT OF THE FEET.>>Terry: THE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL THE ONLY ONE THAT TODD HAS NOT CAPTURED THROUGH HIS ILLUST TREEOUS CAREER. THIS IS A TRIPLE FLIP. LOOK AT HOW HE CURV THIS EDGE GOING INTO IT. TRIPLE FLIP, TRIE TOE. ♪♪>>Dick: TRIPLE LU. WATCH HOW CLEAN THE BACK OUTSIDE EDGE IS INTO THIS. NO FLUTZING THERE.>>Brian: TODD IS SUCH A GREAT COMPETITOR. HE’S MEASURED. HE KNOWS EXACTLY WH TO DO. HE KNOWS WHERE HE IS ON THE ICE. THAT’S WHY HE’S SO CONSISTENT. AND ESE PLACES IN HIS PROGRAM ARE REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE A FALL LIKE THAT IN THE QUAD CAN EXHAUST YOU BECAUSE IT RUINS YOUR MOMENTUM. ANHE REALLY NEEDS THESE REST PLACES SO THE END OHE PROGRAM IS AS STRONG AS HE CAN MAKE THEM. ♪♪>>Brian: THERE IS HIS SECOND TRIPLE AXEL. HE DOUBLED IT.>>Dick: HE WAS NOT GOITO LET IT GO THAT ONE. LOOK AT THE SPEED OF THIS BACK SPIN. THAT’S FINE. THAT’SUST NDY.>>Brian: IT WAS A VERY GUTSY PERFORMANCE.>>Dick: YOU’VE GOT TO ADMIT IT.>>Try: THE PARENTS JOHN AND RUTH. THEY’VE BEEN S SUPPORTIVE OF HIS CAREER. ALL THE FOLKS AT SOUTH CHATHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, HELPED TO SUPPORT HIM. I GUESS WE SHOULDN’T BE SCKED THAT HE HAS TRIED TO QUAD. HE HASN’T BACKED DOWN FROM MANY CHALLENGES.>>Dick: T REALLYREAT THING IS THAT HE LANDED — HE HAD THE FULL REVOLUTION,HE EDGE WAS CLEAN. IT WASN’T A BAD FALL. WE’LL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHETHER OR NOT THE ATTEMPT WAS A MISTAKE.>>Terry: THE JUDGE’>>Brian: HERE HE IS WITH HIS QUAD TOE ATTEMPT. YOU SEE HIM HERE. SPIKING IN WITH HIS RIGHT TOE. HE MAKES THE COMPLETE ROTATION BUT JUST BARELY AL T WAY AROUND AND HE’S LEANIOO FAR TO THE LEFT TO HOLD TH LANDING. YOU SEET OSERUP. TS IN AIR QUICK HERE’S HIS ROTATION, ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR. HE JUST MAKES IT AROUND. IT’S A CLEAN JUMP, BUT HE’S A LITTLE FAR BACKWARD AND A LITTLE TOO FAR TO THE LEFT.>>Dick: BUT A HECK OF A TRY. LOOK AT THIS TRIPL AXEL THAT H STUCK INT THE END JUST TO MAKE SURE HE DID A SECOND ONE>>Dic I THINK IT WAS A VERY COENDABLE PERFORMANCE
